About the reading speed test
How the test works
Bookswallow measures your reading speed in words per minute (WPM). Paste your own text or let AI write a passage on any topic, read it at your natural pace, and stop the timer when you finish. Optional quiz questions then check whether you actually understood what you read.
Your speed is calculated as the number of words in the passage divided by the minutes you spent reading. Because speed means little without understanding, the quiz shows how much you retained, so you can tell fast reading from fast skimming.
What is a good reading speed?
Most adults read silently at roughly 200 to 250 words per minute. Skilled readers and college students often reach 300 WPM or more.
Skimming can reach 400 to 700 WPM, but comprehension usually drops sharply at those speeds. Dense technical text, a second language and small screens all slow reading down, so compare results on similar material.
How to read faster
- Read regularly: speed and vocabulary grow with practice.
- Avoid subvocalizing every word and resist re-reading lines you already understood.
- Use a finger or cursor as a pace guide to keep your eyes moving forward.
- Preview headings and the first sentences before reading in depth.
- Retest weekly on texts of similar difficulty to track real progress.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average reading speed of an adult?
The average adult reads about 200 to 250 words per minute when reading silently with good understanding.
How is words per minute (WPM) calculated?
Divide the number of words in the text by the time you took to read it, in minutes. For example, 500 words read in two minutes is 250 WPM.
Is this reading speed test free?
Yes. The test is completely free and needs no account or sign-up.
Can I test my reading speed with my own text?
Yes. Paste any text and write your own quiz questions, or let AI generate a passage and questions on a topic you choose.
Does reading faster mean understanding less?
Not necessarily, but comprehension often falls once you push beyond your comfortable pace. Use the quiz questions to find the speed where you still understand well.
